A lot of people seem to question why anyone else thinks they deserve to be a goth and stuff like that. Like, one person will insist that no one around her is a goth because they've never heard of certain bands or they were too young to go to such-and-such a show, blah blah blah...
I think that's a load of crap. If goth is anything, it's what you feel on the inside, because goth is all about borrowing and stealing things from other sources to form something new. I mean, look at all the candles, incense, black lace, and religious ornamentation associated with goth. Ripping off Hebrew/Egyptian, Tibetian, and Judeo-Christian faiths. Many "goth" bands claim they don't try to be goth or even know what goth means, they're just dragged into that category by their fans. If so much of what's goth is appropriated from elsewhere, is it really fair to condemn someone else for not being genuine in the scene?
I don't consider myself goth, but I acknowledge that a lot of what I like coincides with what goths find attractive, and vice versa. My own personal style is dark and sometimes morbid, and I don't know why that is. I don't think it's funny to laugh at someone else's pain or misery, but at the same time I have a real black sense of humor and an attraction to what other people consider morbid. I don't think I was raised any differently than most people, I had a healthy upbringing, I was picked on in school, and I chose to embrace my differences instead of suppressing them and trying to be like everyone else. I don't know how these things happen.
